The old name of Bilaspur is Kahlur. It used to be the seat of the Kahlur princely state. The Bhakra dam was built in 1963 after which the old town of Bilaspur was submerged under the waters of Gobind sagar lake. Later a new city of Bilaspur was founded at another site. The old town under the lake is a significant part of the town's history that is remembered to this day.
